Artist Residencies are abundantly fun and exciting. Residencies provide a unique opportunity to meet and work alongside colleagues, learn new techniques and advance as an artist. ChacalArt is unique in the choices you'll have for your creativity in a small Mexican fishing village.

Playa Chacala is a magical place. It naturally draws visitors to its shore, enveloping their spirits in an energy that can only be produced by the sea. â€‹â€‹The Chacala Cultural Foundation was started to give an overall structure to the artistic events happening in this village including a music festival, artists and writers residencies, a mariachi institute and other events. The local Chacala community, as well as part-time and full-time folks who care very much about the people and this beautiful area, combine to produce the various events.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

A vital focus of our residencies is community participation. The artists are encouraged to give back to the region by giving workshops or presentations as well as participating in public exhibitions of their work.

Arts education is broadly absent from school curriculum in our area. If you are an artist planning to participate in a ChacalArt Residency, consider preparing a simple & inspiring workshop for children, teenagers, adults or the elderly.

CHILDREN'S ART WORKSHOP

Another wonderful children's art festival workshop was held on December 2nd under the enormous Marina Chacala palapa. Children came from the mountain tops of Altavista and from Chacala on the ocean to participate in this two hour class. Approximately 40 students participated with 25 Moms and volunteers to make this event successful. The children sat in a large circle and discussed what their families did for a living, and learned about the farming and fishing and the fruits and vegetables from the region.

This was the inspiration for their paintings. After the class the children participated in a swim at the Marina Chacala pools. The art was then framed by the artists and are ready for their road show.

YEARS PAST

Winter 2016 - we hosted a two-week residency program from Nov. 7-19 featuring 5 critically acclaimed artists from the U.S. and Mexico who created art in public spaces and hosted workshops throughout the program, which culminated in a reception and exhibition Friday evening, Nov. 18 at Mar de Jade and a public art exhibition on Saturday, Nov. 19 on the plaza.

Artists

Over the course of three Artists Residencies in Chacala, many fine artists have brought their talent and skills to create over 50 artworks.

The artists have come from Mexico, the United States, Canada and France. The community of artists have expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to share techniques and practices, enhancing their own approach to their work. They share the stories of mentorships and education, as well as exhibitions and gallery showings in their careers. Everyone gains from this learning and producing community.

In addition, many of the resident artists have had opportunities to share their art and techniques with adults and children in Chacala and surrounding towns, through in-school workshops on drawing, printmaking and painting.
